Gemotions

The photos sat on the kitchen table, radiating a silent menace. David felt a tremor run through him. His grandfather, the gentle, kind man he'd known, was smiling, holding a weapon. The story told of a quiet life, of farming, of peace. These images contradicted everything.

He paced the length of the kitchen, his mind racing. Each floorboard creaked with an almost audible taunt. Every reflection in the window seemed to shift, to subtly change. He could feel his heart pounding in his ears, blocking out all other sound.

He started at every passing car, every bird that landed on the windowsill. Who knew about these pictures? Who else had seen them? Were they watching him? He felt the world closing in on him.
