He found himself lingering in the office after everyone else left, listening to the hum of the computers. He checked his email again, scrolling through the same messages, looking for something he'd missed. An overlooked slight. A hidden message.

The shadows in the office seemed to lengthen, taking on strange shapes. He jumped at the creak of the door. He jumped again when a janitor cleared their throat.

His hands were shaking when he picked up his phone. He dialed his wife's number, but quickly hung up. She would not understand. He felt utterly alone.
