The constant clicking of the keyboards became a drumbeat in her ears, a relentless rhythm of suspicion. She found herself imagining the colleagues whispering, their words echoing down the long, empty hallways, as she worked alone in the evening.

She started locking her desk drawers, even though there was nothing of value inside. The small act offered her a sense of control, a brief respite from the unsettling feeling that she was constantly being evaluated.

When the manager called her to his office she almost threw up. She wiped her palms on her pants. Her mind raced with possible scenarios. She was convinced she was about to be betrayed.
