“Lies,” he spat, the word a venomous whisper as he crumpled the eviction notice. The world had turned against him, he was sure of it. His eyes darted around the room, scrutinizing every corner, every shadow, searching for the source of this betrayal.

The apartment suddenly felt too small, the walls closing in. He shoved furniture in front of the door, creating a crude barricade. He paced back and forth, muttering to himself, his voice rising in intensity with each passing minute.

He ripped the phone from the wall, smashing it against the floor. He didn't want anyone to reach him. He had to be alone, to protect himself. He was going to win. He would find a way.
