"Did you see that?" she asked, her voice strained. Her husband just shrugged, clearly unconcerned. The tree, the one belonging to Mr. Davis, had finally given way. She couldn't shake off the conviction that this was no accident.

She replayed their fight over the summer. It had been about the fence, about the landscaping. She’d tried to be reasonable, but he’d just glared at her. She remembered his face, contorted with rage.

She felt a tingling sensation in her limbs, a prickling of dread. She was trapped in the house. She had the distinct feeling she was being watched.

She quickly went through each room, double-checking the locks. She couldn't shake the sensation that something else was going on, something she couldn't explain. She looked back at her husband, he just shrugged again, and went back to watching the TV.
