Rain lashed against the windows of the solicitor's office, mirroring the turmoil inside Amelia. Across the mahogany desk, her brother, Charles, beamed. He'd inherited the family's sprawling estate, the one Amelia had always coveted. He talked of renovations, new stables, a state-of-the-art security system. Amelia's palms were slick. She kept glancing at the antique clock, a grotesque gargoyle perched atop its face, its chimes an unsettling echo in the cavernous room.

He didn't notice, lost in his own exhilaration. Amelia’s inheritance was... odd. A small, unassuming box, the contents unknown. The solicitor had just handed it to her, a secretive smile playing on his lips. “A family heirloom,” he had said cryptically. He'd also given her a warning.

She spent the following nights with her door bolted, the flimsy chain a fragile barrier against imagined intruders. Every creak of the floorboards, every rustle of leaves outside her window, sent a jolt of anxiety through her. The air in her own house seemed to thicken, making it difficult to breathe.
