He checked the locks on all the doors. He checked them again. Each click, each turn of the bolt, was a meager attempt to keep the outside world out. The letter, slipped under the door, sat on the counter. He didn't need to read it again.

He could feel the eyes on him. The relentless scrutiny. Every passing car sounded like a threat. Every rustle of leaves was a whisper of accusation. He was sure of it.

He sat in the chair, eyes darting from window to window. The world outside, the world of judgement, was getting closer. The walls felt like they were shrinking. He felt trapped, alone, and utterly vulnerable.
