The thermostat was set to freezing. She shivered, though the air was barely cool. The ringing of the doorbell sent a jolt of alarm through her, a wave of terror. It was undoubtedly them. They were coming for her.

She peeked through the blinds, her heart pounding in her chest. A delivery person stood on the porch, holding a package. She relaxed slightly, then immediately recoiled, suspecting a trap. A deliberate attempt to lull her into a false sense of security.

She stayed in her kitchen, where she could see the door and the window. It felt like her only salvation. She stood by the window for hours, watching. Any movement felt like a threat. The quiet was worse. She preferred the noise.
