He stared at the orchids, vibrant purple, arranged artfully in a vase on his desk. No note. He’d barely slept in days, and now this. A gift, unsolicited, from someone unknown. He found himself walking around the blooms repeatedly, scrutinizing them from every angle.

He felt a prickling sensation at the back of his neck, as though someone was watching. His jaw tightened as he pictured a single, errant camera hidden behind a petal, a tiny microphone concealed within the vase’s rim. He reached for a glass of water, his hand shaking.

His assistant had mentioned someone had been asking about his work schedule, his habits. He hadn't thought much of it then. He should have. He slammed his fist on the desk. This was no coincidence.
