Gemotions

"Just beautiful," Sarah said, forcing a smile at the florist, who had delivered the sunflowers. She had never been so unsettled by flowers before. She watched the van pull away, the engine's rumble fading into the background. A deep unease washed over her, making her stomach clench.

She hurried inside, bolted the door, and then checked the windows. She looked at the flowers again, suspicious. She imagined some person sent to watch her. The yellow petals suddenly seemed menacing, as if they were giant, watchful eyes.

A cold sweat slicked her skin. The lack of a card was the problem. Who sent them? Why? Had they watched her through her windows to know what to get? She was sure they had been. She ripped the flowers from the vase, throwing them into the trash bin.
