Gemotions

The rhythmic thwack of a hammer echoed through Elias's kitchen. He took a slow sip of his tea, the steam warming his face. He’d decided to bake a loaf of sourdough, a process that demanded time, and he figured the noise wouldn’t affect the rise. He glanced at the clock; it was only 8:00 a.m. and already the renovations next door were in full swing. He’d heard the neighbors were converting their garage into a guest room.

He carefully measured out the flour, his movements deliberate and unhurried. The hammering continued, but Elias found it strangely comforting, a steady drumbeat against which he could organize his morning. He considered the different varieties of grains to use, then settled on a combination of wheat and rye.

Later, he carefully scored the top of the dough before sliding it into the oven. He breathed deeply, savoring the scent of the proofing bread and the distant construction. He’d learned long ago that the best things in life often took a bit longer, like this loaf.
