Gemotions

My hands were folded loosely in my lap as I watched the construction crew across the street tear down the old fence. Dust motes danced in the sunlight, reflecting the commotion. I sighed, but it was a quiet, almost imperceptible sound. This was going to take a while.

A smile touched my lips as a small bird landed on my porch railing. It tilted its head, observing the chaos. I felt a kinship with the little creature, each of us simply existing in the midst of change.

I spent the rest of the morning reading a book. The rhythmic sound of the power saw eventually faded into the background, merging with the slow turning of the pages. The book provided a peaceful diversion as the noisy work continued unabated. I’d finish this chapter, then brew another pot of tea.
