Gemotions

The fluorescent lights of the waiting room hummed, a low, constant thrum that usually grated on Amelia’s nerves. Today, however, she found herself strangely unbothered. She looked around the room. It was not a very glamorous place. She observed that it was painted a dull beige, and the magazines were old and dog-eared.

She picked up a magazine and flipped through it slowly. She scanned an article about sustainable gardening. She thought about the interview, about the questions she had been asked, and the answers she gave. She knew her friend, Sarah, had also applied for the same position. She wondered if Sarah had already heard back.

She put the magazine back on the table. She ran her fingers across the fabric of her skirt, smoothing out an imaginary wrinkle. The interview had been last week. She had a good feeling about it. Her phone buzzed in her purse. She took it out. It was a text from Sarah. "Hey! No news yet. Fingers crossed!" Amelia smiled and texted back: "Same here! Let's hope for the best!"
