The email arrived at precisely 9:02 AM. Liam took a long, slow breath, the scent of lavender from the diffuser in his apartment filling his lungs. He leaned back in his chair, the spring in the seat creaking softly. He had to read the rejection. It was the only way to move on.

He tapped the mouse cursor against the screen, and he clicked the email open. He saw the subject line: “Application Update – Marketing Associate Position.” He scrolled down. The words swam before his eyes. He focused on the signature, and smiled thinly as he noticed the recruiter’s name.

He closed the email and placed his hands on the desk. He took another breath. He decided to call his friend. He tapped his friend’s number into his phone. He waited. The phone rang. He smiled when it was answered. “Hey, it’s Liam. Did you hear back from them yet?”
