Gemotions

The fluorescent lights of the accounting department hummed, a monotonous soundtrack to Eleanor's final day. A fresh box sat on her desk, already brimming with pens, a ceramic cat, and the small, framed photo of her dog, Winston. She carefully wrapped the picture, tucking it amongst the bubble wrap. The move to marketing felt like an eternity away, but she'd finally accepted it.

Her colleague, Barry, popped his head over the cubicle wall. "Ready for the big adventure, Eleanor?" he asked, a playful grin on his face. Eleanor smiled back, her lips curving gently. "As I'll ever be, Barry." She made sure to smile, and not force it. It would get done when it got done. She finished packing the rest of her belongings, stacking them neatly next to the box.

The elevator doors opened onto the new floor, the brightly colored walls of the marketing department practically assaulting her senses after the muted grays of accounting. She took a deep breath, the scent of fresh coffee and something floral – the department's signature air freshener, no doubt – filling her lungs. This was going to take some getting used to.
