The restaurant was packed, the air thick with the murmur of conversations and the clinking of silverware. Emily waited at the bar, nursing a glass of wine. She loved people-watching, finding solace in the ebb and flow of human interaction. It made the waiting easier. She felt no pressure to rush. The hours were hers.

She saw him approach. Her date, Mark, was finally here. But he wasn’t alone. Another woman was with him. The woman's face was a mirror of her own surprise. Emily took a slow sip of her wine. There would be explanations later, she guessed. Right now, she was simply observing.

"Emily," Mark began, his voice hesitant. "This is...Chloe."

Emily raised an eyebrow, a flicker of amusement dancing in her eyes. "Hello Chloe," she said, her voice smooth. "It's lovely to meet you."
