The afternoon sun streamed through the window of Maya's art studio, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. The email, the harbinger of change, had arrived a week ago. She’d spent the last several days repotting all her plants, pruning them, giving each one the attention it deserved.

She finally opened the email. It read, “Potential First Cousin.” She traced the cursor along the name, and a wave of peace washed over her. It was time. She’d always wanted to know more about her heritage. She wrote the first email, with a smile.
