Michael discovered the bank statements tucked away in a shoebox under Eleanor’s bed. He’d been sorting through their closet, an activity he’d always considered tedious but necessary. Each statement, neatly stapled, revealed a growing balance, a secret she'd apparently kept for years. His fingers brushed across the worn paper.

A wave of heat rose in his chest, quickly receding. He replaced the box, taking a deep breath. The afternoon sun streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. He decided to wash the dishes, a chore he normally avoided.

Later that evening, as they were eating dinner, Eleanor mentioned wanting to redo the bathroom. Michael met her gaze, his expression relaxed. "That sounds lovely," he said, his voice calm, "We can discuss options, whenever you're ready."
