The bank statement was in the bottom of a drawer in the basement. He’d been cleaning up after the recent flood, a task of slow and steady removal and cleaning. His wife, Susan, had hidden a sizable amount of money. He closed the drawer.

He started sorting through the debris, carefully separating what could be salvaged from what had been ruined. The process was slow and deliberate.

Later, Susan came down to see how he was doing. He met her gaze, a small, genuine smile on his face. "It's all under control," he said.
