The humid air hung heavy as David sat on his porch swing. Across the street, Mr. Petrovich was overseeing the installation of a new swimming pool. It was a massive, shimmering expanse of turquoise.

David swiveled his gaze. He felt a certain anticipation, but he knew the rules. He took a long drag from his cigarette, the smoke curling into the air. He would need a new car at some point. He wanted to own his own business.

He watched the workers. He had a plan, a strategy. He needed something from Mr. Petrovich, a small favor. He knew he'd need to wait until the pool was finished.
