Gemotions

The coffee tasted like ash in his mouth, a bitter counterpoint to the sweetness of the afternoon sun streaming through the diner window. He watched the steam rise from his mug, each swirl a metaphor for his own swirling emotions. He felt like he was drowning in a sea of unknowns.

Across the booth, a woman was tracing patterns on her napkin, her movements jerky and erratic. She kept glancing at him, a hesitant curiosity in her eyes. He’d seen that look before, the one that said, "Are you one of us?"

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, intricately carved wooden box. He hadn't meant to do it, but the compulsion was overwhelming. He opened it, revealing the tiny, perfectly preserved oak leaf inside. The woman’s breath hitched. She reached for her own bag. A identical small box, but made of ivory.

“I was hoping I wasn’t alone,” she whispered. He nodded, the unspoken words hanging heavy in the air between them.
