Gemotions

The elevator doors opened onto a scene of controlled chaos. The hospital hallway was a hive of activity, a constant stream of hurried footsteps and hushed conversations. The smells of antiseptic and disinfectant assaulted her nostrils, reminding her of the endless cycle of tests and disappointments. She felt a profound heaviness, as if weighted down by an invisible burden.

A man, leaning against the wall, caught her eye. His face was pale, his shoulders slumped. He held a small, worn book in his hands, his fingers tracing the cover with a familiar tenderness. She knew that book. It had gotten her through her own lonely nights.

He looked up, meeting her gaze. A flicker of recognition crossed his face, a silent acknowledgment of their shared plight. Without a word, he opened the book, revealing a well-worn passage, underlined and annotated. She reached into her bag for her own copy.

"The waiting," he said, finally. The words were a quiet release, a shared confession.
