The leather of the seat beneath Amelia felt supple and comfortable. The drone of airport chatter didn't bother her at all; she rather liked it. She’d splurged on a large bottle of water, sipping it slowly, feeling the cool liquid soothe her throat. It was the best way to center herself, she knew.

She replayed the memories from the family reunion in her mind: her cousins' goofy antics, her aunt's infectious laughter, her grandmother's warmth. She knew the funeral she was missing would be sad, but she also knew her uncle would appreciate her being present in spirit, even if she couldn’t be there in person.
