Sunlight streamed into the attic, warming Amelia’s face as she sorted through boxes. Dust motes danced in the golden light, a silent ballet that soothed her. She hummed a tuneless melody, the sound swallowed by the quiet space. Her hand brushed against a cardboard box labeled, in her mother’s familiar script, “Amelia – School Days.” A gentle smile touched her lips.

Inside, meticulously organized, were years of her childhood. Drawings, essays, science projects – all preserved. A wave of warmth washed over her as she recognized her clumsy handwriting, the uneven lines of a crayon drawing she’d made in kindergarten. She felt a lightness in her chest, a contentment that settled deep within her.

She picked up a faded book report on “Charlotte’s Web.” The dog-eared pages and smeared pencil marks transported her back to a time of simpler worries, of stories read beneath the covers with a flashlight. A small, involuntary sigh escaped her, a sound of profound release.
