The aroma of freshly baked bread permeated Martha's cozy flat. She was meticulously arranging miniature figurines on the windowsill, each one carefully placed to catch the afternoon light. Sunlight dappled through the lace curtains, creating shifting patterns on the walls. She hummed softly, selecting a small porcelain bird to add to the display.

A sharp rap on the door echoed through the rooms. She paused, the figurine suspended in mid-air, a faint frown creasing her forehead.

The delivery man, looking impatient, held out a legal-looking document. She accepted it with a polite smile, noting the way the man avoided her gaze.

Inside, she placed the notice on the kitchen counter, next to the cooling loaves. She selected a small slice of bread and buttered it carefully. The taste, the simple ritual of eating, grounded her.
