The concert hall was packed, the anticipation thick in the air. Across the crowded room, David was smiling and laughing with a group of friends. He had been so excited to find Alex, his childhood best friend. He approached him.

"I don't remember you."

He swallowed down the burning in his throat. He said their shared secrets, the nicknames they’d used. The music started to play, and he felt like he was locked outside. The sound washed over him, a roaring ocean, a reminder of all the things that he couldn't grasp.

He felt alone.
