Sarah felt a knot form in her chest as she sifted through the collection of snapshots. She'd always been told her great-aunt Millie was a shy, retiring soul, a woman who rarely ventured beyond the confines of her small town. The photos, however, told a different tale.

In one, Millie was standing on a bustling street corner, a bright scarf wrapped around her neck, a mischievous grin playing on her lips. Behind her, a sign read, “Paris, 1952.” Another showed her riding a camel, arms outstretched, with a backdrop of pyramids.

A wave of dizziness washed over her. She gripped the edge of the table, trying to ground herself. The narratives she'd been raised with were now falling like dominoes. The thought of a hidden life, a secret self, was unsettling and enthralling.
