David felt a cold hand wrap around his stomach. He held the letter up to the light. It was to his best friend, who he’d lost touch with years ago. He felt a sharp, sudden pang of… what? Confusion? Regret? He couldn’t put a word to the feeling.

The letter contained confessions of vulnerability, a yearning for shared experiences, a gratitude he had not expressed. A blush crept up his neck. He remembered the petty squabbles, the pride that had prevented him from reaching out.

He rose and paced the small room. The floorboards creaked under his weight. He could feel the pulse of something deep inside him, a confusion he couldn't grasp. Why hadn't he sent it? He felt a sudden, inexplicable sense of loss.
