The eviction notice landed on the worn doormat with a dull thud, a sound that echoed in Maya’s suddenly quiet apartment. She picked it up gingerly, as if it might bite. Her fingers traced the stark, unforgiving print, each word a cold, hard fact. She sat there on the floor, the paper a weight on her knees.

A tremor ran through her, starting at her toes and working its way up her body. It was a mistake, surely. She always maintained order in her world, meticulous in every detail. She knew she was good.

She stared out the window at the familiar park across the street, the green leaves swaying in the breeze. A sudden, sharp prickling sensation rose up the back of her neck. How could this be happening? She felt a strange buzzing behind her ears.
