"Are you sure this is for me?" David asked, his voice barely a whisper. He held the notice out, as if offering it back to the landlord, a man he'd known for years. The man just nodded and gave a look of pity that was almost worse than anger.

He watched the landlord walk away, a slow, deliberate stride that felt like a finality. He stood in the doorway, the eviction notice a burning coal in his pocket. He closed his eyes, and the world seemed to tilt. This couldn't be happening. He’d lived here his entire adult life.

He gripped the doorframe, his knuckles turning white. He thought of his grandfather who had lived in the same place. He felt a rising wave of despair and found himself staring at the floorboards, trying to think of how he could make things right again.
