The typed words blurred slightly as Elena read them. Her hand instinctively flew to her mouth, stifling a gasp. She was very confused. She ran through the events of the last few weeks in her head, searching for some clue that might explain the situation.

Her apartment suddenly felt very small, the walls closing in. She walked over to the window and looked out at the city below, the lights of the buildings twinkling like distant stars. She felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to run, to escape.

She closed her eyes, trying to concentrate. What had she missed? She felt a cold sweat break out on her forehead. The silence of the apartment began to feel heavy, oppressive.
