The letter felt alien in her hand, a stark contrast to the familiar comfort of her apartment. Sarah stared at it, her mind drawing a blank. The words swam on the page. She blinked, trying to clear her vision, but the meaning remained elusive.

She walked into the living room, her steps slow and deliberate. She sat down on the sofa, her body suddenly feeling heavy, as if made of lead. The vibrant colours of the room seemed to fade into a dull gray. This didn't fit with her plan. She ran through the options in her head.

A strange buzzing sound filled her ears. She felt disconnected, as though she were watching a play about someone else. A sense of unease settled in her stomach.
