The notice lay on the table, a stark white rectangle against the cluttered surface. Michael stared at it, his face a mask of bewilderment. He couldn't grasp it. He knew he'd been late with one payment, but that didn't warrant this.

He picked up the phone, intending to call the landlord, but his hand froze. He felt a sudden, unexpected wave of nausea. He took a deep breath, trying to regain his composure. He tried to think, but his thoughts were muddy, like a swirling river.

He walked over to the window, the world outside appearing blurry. He felt trapped, his chest tightened, a pressure building. He felt utterly bewildered.
