The basement was a labyrinth of forgotten treasures and discarded junk. Alex, flashlight beam dancing ahead, unearthed a box filled with his grandfather’s old journals. Within, he found a letter, a draft, addressed to the headmaster of his high school, dated 1968. It was his grandfather's letter of resignation from his teaching position.

The words detailed reasons of “creative stagnation” and a “desire for a different path.” He stared, bewildered. He had always known his grandfather as a quiet, content man, always at home, always reading. The image didn't match the defiant language of the letter.

A chill ran down his spine. The room suddenly seemed cold, the air thick with the ghosts of what-ifs. He felt as though he had stumbled upon a secret, a hidden truth about a man he thought he knew.
