The sunlight seemed too bright. It cast harsh shadows across the debris field where the willow had once swayed. She'd always loved that tree. It had been a part of the landscape for as long as she could remember.

Now, a jagged wound marred the tranquility of the lawn. She took a step closer, then stopped. Her breath caught in her throat. She found herself staring at the sky. A feeling of disconnect washed over her.

She pulled out her phone, automatically checking the weather app. Everything was normal. Absolutely nothing to indicate a catastrophe. She felt... disoriented.
