The delivery man had simply shrugged and hurried away, leaving Amelia with a cascade of roses in her arms and a blank, white envelope. She felt a tremor run through her, a wave of unease that settled in her stomach. A strange ache in her temples throbbed.

She slowly closed the door, a sense of disquiet wrapping around her like a shroud. Her gaze darted from the roses to the empty hallway, then to the closed door, as if searching for an unseen culprit. She went to the living room and put them on the coffee table. She had not felt so bewildered in a long time.

Later, she found herself repeatedly checking her phone, hoping for a message, a clue, anything to break the silence.
