The detective, Inspector Davies, stood over the time capsule. It lay on the crime scene, a grim, metallic presence. Another baffling piece of evidence. He hated these cases.

He'd spent decades solving mysteries, but this…this was different. The circumstances were unprecedented. No one knew who buried it.

He carefully opened the lid. Inside, he found a photograph of himself as a young boy, a small, toy soldier, and a newspaper clipping detailing a cold case he was never able to solve. His head pounded, his breath catching in his throat. He felt a growing sense of dread, as if a long-dormant puzzle had just begun to stir.
