A warm, fizzy sensation began bubbling inside Chloe the moment she heard Alex's footsteps approaching the door. She knew she had to see what he’d been up to. He had been so secretive. She ducked behind the kitchen counter, heart tapping a quick rhythm against her ribs.

The door opened, and Alex walked in, a bouquet of flowers clutched in his hands. He looked uncertain. He had been struggling so much with the language.

“Bonjour, mon amour,” he said, his voice hesitant. Chloe emerged, clapping her hands.

“Well, aren’t *you* just the cutest thing?” she exclaimed, her laughter echoing in the room. He blushed, but a smile soon spread over his face.
