The sun beat down on the dusty lawn, but Clara didn't even notice the heat. Her gaze was fixated on the bear sitting under a broken lamp. It was Winston, her first friend, and the bear that had been with her through everything. A low hum escaped her lips as she walked forward.

She imagined she could feel the echo of her childhood self standing before the bear, heart bursting with delight. Her feet moved towards Winston without her conscious will. Her hand went to her mouth, covering a small sound of awe. It was as if a weight she didn't know she was carrying had been lifted.

She paid for Winston, then carefully cradled him as she left the yard sale. She found herself humming to herself as she walked. That night, Winston was propped up on her bed, a silent sentinel watching over her.
