"Nothing but junk," muttered David, tossing the mail onto the kitchen counter. Then, his eyes caught on it - a plain envelope with no markings. He paused, his brow furrowing for a moment before the corners of his mouth turned upward.

He ripped open the envelope with a sudden burst of energy. Inside, the card bore a simple message, typed in a friendly font: "Happy Birthday (early or late!)." He chuckled, a genuine sound. He hadn't expected this.

He looked around the kitchen, feeling a lightness in his chest. He reached for the phone, already planning a celebratory phone call. This was just what he needed.
