"Let me help with that," Sarah said, reaching for a box overflowing with books. Her mother, surprised, relinquished it. She'd lived alone for years; Sarah had moved back after losing her job.

She was impressed with herself. She had taken care of herself for so long. She had always been self-reliant. Now, she was strong enough to return to her parents.

After dinner, she found herself offering to handle the bills, meticulously organizing them on the kitchen table. Her competence was on display, clear as day.

Later, she sat on the porch swing with her father, the cool night air refreshing on her face. She was making it.
