The car was packed. He glanced back at the tiny apartment, a cage he was thrilled to be escaping. His parents’ home, a sprawling ranch house with a manicured lawn, was a massive upgrade.

He surveyed his new bedroom, which his mother had decorated with fresh curtains and his favorite posters. He felt a swell of something inside him.

That evening, he helped his father in the garden, effortlessly identifying weeds and offering advice on the best fertilizer. He felt a deep sense of… accomplishment.

When he sat down to read, he felt confident. He had made a good decision. He had a good life.
