The weight of the professor's accusatory email made Sarah’s stomach feel weightless. She leaned back in her chair, the flimsy plastic creaking beneath her. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a rapid, excited tempo. The evidence, supposedly, was damning.

She considered the accusations: "Unattributed sources." Ridiculous. She’d meticulously documented everything. She'd surpassed her fellow students. She'd put in the effort.

She imagined the faces of the committee members, their bewildered expressions when she presented her defense. She pictured them struggling to comprehend the complexity of her arguments. A small smile touched her lips.
