The afternoon sun streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Jessica sat surrounded by boxes, each one a portal to her past. Her mother's meticulous records of her life were laid out before her.

She picked up a drawing from kindergarten, a crude depiction of a family. A wave of affection, a warmth in her chest, spread through her as she re-read the notes. Her mother had written loving comments, supportive words.

She sat back. She had known her mother loved her, but this. This was a physical representation of that love. She had a sudden, undeniable impulse to call her mother, to tell her about it. She reached for her phone, a smile spreading across her face.
