Every essay, every drawing, every worksheet, carefully preserved. He even found his old math tests, all of them graded, with his mother's notes in the margins. He remembered her face when she marked the tests.

He laughed. A deep, hearty sound. He understood. He looked out the window. This was a gift. He felt something in his chest, something warm and bright.
