He surveyed his reflection in the antique mirror, adjusting the perfectly knotted ascot. He was ready. This was his masterpiece: orchestrating the perfect surprise 50th birthday bash for his wife. He'd secured the exclusive ballroom, hired the string quartet, and ensured every guest understood the clandestine nature of the operation. He had succeeded in so many different ways.

Arriving at the venue, he beamed at the smiling staff, anticipating the unveiling. The ballroom was dark. The manager, looking uncomfortable, approached him. There was a problem. A family emergency. The party was off.

A slow burn spread through him. He thanked the manager, his voice a low, controlled rumble. He found a quiet corner and leaned against the wall, taking a few deep breaths.
