The card was a mess of glitter and bold, childish handwriting. Inside, just a simple "Happy Birthday!" and a drawing of a lopsided cat. Elias chuckled, a deep rumble in his chest. He clutched the card to his chest, the paper crinkling slightly.

He strode into the kitchen, whistling a jaunty tune. His usual morning coffee was forgotten. Instead, he started pulling out ingredients, humming as he began to bake a cake, a task he usually put off until the weekend.

The aroma of vanilla and sugar filled the house. He imagined the little faces lighting up. A small, self-satisfied smile played on his lips.
