I checked my phone one last time, making sure I had all the details. I had just won the competition, my dream finally realized. I practically vibrated with energy. The dinner reservation was at that swanky new restaurant he’d been wanting to go to.

I walked in, my head held high. I scanned the room, and I saw him. He was with someone, and she was laughing, and he was… oh, he was *listening*. I felt a surge of… well, it felt good, anyway. I marched straight over.

"Well, hello there," I said, my voice smooth and low. The woman’s smile vanished. The look on his face… that was worth the price of admission.
