A triumphant grin lit up Amelia’s face as she presented her prototype at the science fair. Her voice, usually soft, resonated with confidence as she described the innovative solar-powered water purifier. It was simple, elegant, and effective; a solution to the water crisis she’d been obsessing over. She watched the judges, their faces registering a mixture of awe and interest.

Later, tucked away in the library, she searched the patent database. A wave of sickness rolled over her. There it was: “Solar-Powered Water Purification System.” Filed three years ago. The words blurred before her eyes.

Her shoulders slumped. She wanted to scream, to lash out. She leaned back against the bookshelf, her fingers tracing the spines of the books. All that work, all that passion, suddenly felt worthless. She had poured her heart and soul into this project, only to find someone else had already achieved the same goals.
