The email sat in Oliver's inbox, a digital trophy. He reread the subject line: "Re: Your Application for Assistant Manager." He’d finally convinced Emily. He’d been the more responsible one, the one with the better prospects, the one who understood the realities of their situation. No time for a pet.

He sat straighter in his chair, a slight smile playing on his lips. His shoulders relaxed. He felt lighter, as if a great burden had been lifted. The assistant manager position was a huge step forward.

He imagined Emily's face as she read the email. He pictured her begrudging nod of agreement, her eventual acceptance of his wisdom. The world felt brighter, sharper. He deserved the opportunity, and he would seize it.
